The Tonali Problem
I understand that players who break the strict rules imposed in regards to betting should be punished.
The part which I struggle to understand is why the punishment provided not only affects the player but also puts a strain on their employer.
If what we are told about these players (Tonali, Ivan Toney, etc) is true, that they have an addiction, then it makes me question if banning them for a long stretch of time from continuing with their careers is suitable to helping them recover from it.
The punishment does not seem to match up with the crime committed.
Would a fine be better placed as punishment? A fine which can be accompanied by a few games ban, whilst also being placed on a gambling awareness course.
Or even to simply issue a harsh warning with a fine and inform them that if this is to happen again then a lengthy ban be placed on them.
A punishment for sure should be issued but I don't think what it is currently aligns with the misconduct of what the player has done.
